Water Safety & Operations
Building operations people can trust — planning, capable people, clear leadership, practical decisions.
Overview
SHACADEMY is an independent open water safety and operations consultancy, working with venues, activity operators, event organisers and productions across the UK.
Safe operations are built through planning, capable people, clear leadership and practical decisions made in the moment. They rarely come from paperwork alone. The work covers open water safety planning, water safety management for events, venue safety and operational systems, risk assessment that teams can actually use, and honest reviews of how those systems perform once the site is live.
The work is led by practitioners who have done the job: planning operations, leading teams on the ground and making the calls when it matters. The result is confidence, not compliance theatre.
Common Challenges
What clients usually arrive with.
- A safety-critical operation with no experienced lead in place.
- Existing systems that look right on paper but don't hold up in practice.
- Complex environments that need pragmatic, site-specific planning.
- Growing scale — moving from small events to significant operational responsibility.
Where Projects Begin
Who this work is for.
Open water venues and lakes, watersports centres, outdoor activity operators, swim, paddle and triathlon event organisers, schools and outdoor education providers, estates, local authorities and productions working on or near water — anyone carrying responsibility for people around open water.
Projects usually start in one of two places: an operation being designed or scaled up and needing safety and operational planning it can stand behind, or an operation already running where the organisation wants an independent read on whether the systems, procedures and people are working as intended.
SHACADEMY advises and builds operational capability. It does not certify or accredit organisations, and it does not offer regulatory guarantees — the value is in practical operational improvement that holds up on the ground.

Practitioner-Led
Advice built from delivering the work, not observing it.
SHACADEMY was founded by Scott "Skip" Innes, whose background is operational delivery: leading water safety teams, running venue and event operations, developing lifeguards and safety staff, and working on productions and expeditions where the plan has to survive contact with real conditions.
That experience shapes how the work is done — customer journeys, staffing, procedures and day-to-day habits are treated as part of the safety system, because in practice that is exactly what they are.
About SHACADEMY and Scott Innes →Our Operational Philosophy
Excellent operations are built, not declared.
Excellent water safety is rarely the result of one outstanding decision. It's the product of strong systems, capable people, shared responsibility, clear leadership, practical experience and continuous improvement — held together over time.
That's the philosophy that runs through everything SHACADEMY does. It's what separates practitioner-led operational advisory from traditional consultancy that stops at the report.
- 01Strong systems that people trust and use.
- 02Capable people, developed through responsibility.
- 03Shared responsibility across the operation.
- 04Clear leadership at every level.
- 05Practical experience over theory.
- 06Continuous improvement, honestly reviewed.
What Success Looks Like
Outcomes that matter.
Success isn't measured by the size of the report at the end. It's measured by what actually happens on the ground once the destination is open.
- 01Teams understand their roles.
- 02Decisions are made confidently.
- 03Visitors feel safe.
- 04Rescue resources are appropriate to the risk.
- 05Communication is clear across the operation.
- 06Small issues are resolved before becoming incidents.
- 07Organisations develop long-term operational confidence.
Independent Operational Reviews
Independent Operational Reviews
Many clients ask SHACADEMY to independently review their operations once they are live — an honest, practitioner-led read on how safety and delivery are really performing on the ground.
Secret Swimmer Reviews are one application of the wider SHACADEMY Independent Operational Review Methodology, focused on the customer perspective. The same methodology also underpins broader safety and operational assurance work.
