Open-water practitioner development
Before you lead people on open water, learn to understand the environment you’re operating in.
Individual and small-group development for people who work, or want to work, around inland and open water. Practical, waterside, led by founder Scott ‘Skip’ Innes.
The proposition
Qualifications provide important foundations.
Experience, environmental understanding and continued development are what allow practitioners to keep growing. This development complements recognised qualifications and awarding bodies rather than replacing them — and it is not a criticism of either.
What we work on is the environment: reading it, respecting it, making decisions in it, and building the judgement that only comes from spending proper time on real water with somebody who has done it for a living.
SHACADEMY does not award qualifications. This is development, mentoring and practical experience — separate from, and alongside, whatever awards and tickets you hold or are working towards.

Development themes
What we tend to work on.
Every programme is shaped around your experience, your role and where you are trying to get to. These are the themes it usually draws from.
Environmental literacy
Understanding the water you are working on: what it does, what it hides, how it changes and why the same site behaves differently on different days.
Reading conditions
Wind, weather, water level, temperature, light and traffic — and what today's combination actually means for the session in front of you.
Dynamic decision-making
Making good decisions early, adjusting as conditions change, and being comfortable changing or stopping a session without it feeling like failure.
Prevention
Building a working habit of removing problems before they develop, rather than relying on being good in a rescue.
Situational awareness
Holding the whole picture: the environment, the group, the individuals, the equipment and everything else happening around the site.
Communication
Clear, calm, consistent briefing and instruction — including the difficult conversations, and how you sound when things are going wrong.
Group management
Positioning, spacing, grouping and pacing on open water, and how those choices reduce or create risk.
Equipment awareness
Buoyancy, leashes, craft, communication and rescue equipment — what is appropriate, what is not, and understanding it well enough to use it under pressure.
Professional judgement
Knowing the limits of your own experience, working within them honestly, and knowing when to ask.
Responsibility
Looking after yourself first, and understanding the effect your decisions have on everybody else on the water.
Continued development
What to do after the qualification: how to keep learning from the environment, from other practitioners and from your own sessions.
The thinking underneath it
Two frameworks, used properly.
The SHACADEMY Way™
How we think and behave: Self, Humility, Awareness, Communication, Ability, Decision Making, Environment, Mentorship, You / Ownership.
The SHACADEMY WATER Safety Framework™
What we consider here and now: Wind & Weather, Ability & Awareness, Tools, Environment & Exit, Rescue & Responsibility.
Both are published in full and free to use. Neither replaces proper training, recognised qualifications, local knowledge, risk assessment or professional procedures — they create a habit of thinking.
Read the frameworks →How it works
Practical, waterside and led by the environment.
- One-to-one development
- Small groups
- Practical and in the water
- Waterside rather than classroom
- Environment-led sessions
- Bespoke to your experience and objectives
Development is scoped after a conversation, because a newly qualified pool lifeguard moving outdoors and an experienced paddlesport coach wanting to read conditions better need different things. Usually arranged in Surrey and the Surrey Hills, around Dorking, Reigate and Guildford.
We do not promise employment outcomes and we do not award qualifications. What we can do is help you be genuinely more capable, more aware and better prepared for the environment you want to work in.
