Where

United Kingdom — club racing

Who it suits

Paddlers who like the club side of racing — a team to travel with, and a reason to train through the year.

Sensible experience

Able to paddle hard from a standing start and turn a buoy on both sides. Fitness matters less than being used to the format.

Equipment

Class rules are set by the organisers and change, so check the current programme before buying anything for it.

Skip’s take — first-hand

I ran the SHAC SUP race team, and we attended the Club Championships in 2018 along with other events around that period. That team is where I learned how much faster people improve with a fixture in the diary.

What makes it distinctive

The team element. It makes racing sociable rather than exposing.

What preparation matters

Starts, buoy turns, short intervals, and simply racing more often. Club racing improves people quickly because it repeats.

Starts and turns, race-pace intervals, and honest advice on which class to enter for where you actually are.

Sources & current information

Event dates, distances, classes, entry requirements and rules are set by organisers and change. Nothing here is an entry service, an endorsement or an affiliation — other than GLAGLA UK, which SHACADEMY co-founded. Always enter through the official organiser and read their current information before planning travel or training around an event.
