First-hand experience
River Axe Race
A river race on the Axe, the kind of friendly regional event where the water itself shapes the result as much as fitness does.

Where
River Axe, Devon
Who it suits
Paddlers who already paddle regularly and want a genuine race without a national-series atmosphere. A good second or third event.
Sensible experience
Comfortable paddling continuously for the distance, and happy reading moving water and shallow sections.
Equipment
Whatever board you paddle well. River lines, fin choice and being willing to step off in the shallows matter more than board width.
Skip’s take — first-hand
One of my favourite races. I won it a couple of years ago, and I would still recommend it to someone stepping up from their first event.
What makes it distinctive
River racing rewards reading the water. Local knowledge and line choice count.
What preparation matters
Steady race-pace work, short hard efforts, and practice paddling efficiently in moving water rather than flat still water.

How SHACADEMY can help you get ready
Race-pace sessions, moving-water technique and a plan for the day. Skip has raced it and won it, so the advice is first-hand.
Sources & current information
Event dates, distances, classes, entry requirements and rules are set by organisers and change. Nothing here is an entry service, an endorsement or an affiliation — other than GLAGLA UK, which SHACADEMY co-founded. Always enter through the official organiser and read their current information before planning travel or training around an event.
